What to know about the World Cup in Boston
Contrary to what they’d like you to believe, the World Cup matches will NOT be held in Boston!
Gillette Stadium (referred to as Boston Stadium by FIFA) is located in Foxborough, MA, approximately 1 hour from Logan International Airport / Downtown Boston and approximately 30 mins from Waltham without traffic (which is NEVER the case!)
Boston’s football tradition dates to the Oneida Football Club in the late 19th century, cited as one of the first football clubs established anywhere outside of England. The club had an impressive record, going undefeated for most of its seasons between 1862 and 1867.
Boston has played host to three FIFA championships: the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA™, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in 1999 and 2003.
Boston (Foxborough) is slated to host seven matches in total: five group-stage games (including on Friday, June 26th), one Round of 32 match, and one Quarter-final on July 9, 2026.
Why Waltham?
- Waltham played a pivotal role in the American Industrial Revolution as the original home of the Boston Manufacturing Company — the first fully integrated textile mill in the United States. Its innovative factory system reshaped American manufacturing.
- The city earned the nickname “Watch City” for its historic association with the watch-making industry (the Waltham Watch Company produced millions of watches and instruments on early assembly lines).
- Today, Waltham is a thriving suburban city of about 65,000 residents ~10 miles west of Boston. It blends history, education, tech, and culture.
- Waltham is home to Bentley University (a private university focused on business, technology, and analytics) and Brandeis University (a private research university with a strong reputation for liberal arts, sciences, and global research).
- Waltham continues to grow its biotech and commercial sectors, with companies expanding office space and contributing to local economic energy.
